Legends of the Airwaves - Robbie Vincent
October 21, 2009 01:56 PM PDT
We are listening to Robbie Vincent in the closing days of 1979. Christmas and New Year's Eve are almost upon us and Robbie has some monster tunes to play... Johhny Bristol, Brass Construction and Bobby Womack to name a few. Tom Holland and Brother Louie pass through the studio with a few of their favourite records and legendary clubs The Lacy Lady and Didoz (The California Ballroom) are soon to close their doors. These shows were saught after up and down the country and passed around as a means to hear new releases from the jazz and soul world. Robbie Vincent in his hey day and a 60min full on sample for your consideration. We need more like this! For a little educational insight into the times check out this page - http://www.california-ballroom.info/gigs/gigs-1979.htm Legends of the Airwaves - Norman Jay OBEOctober 01, 2009 02:36 PM PDT
From his early runnings with pirate radio to the present day, and a damn fine sound system at carnival, Norman Jay has been at the top of his game, working his magic in the clubs around the world entertaining thousands. There's not a music lover out there that doesn't acknowledge this OBE holder and little can be said in brief to represent his achievements. When Kiss FM launched legally it was Norman who presented the first show. If you go to the November Southport Weekender Norman will still be doing what he does best after all these years at the top. So, what have we at UK Vibe offered up? Well, we are in 1991 and James Brown has been imprisoned, Norman has a rave party to promote that he is doing with Gilles Peterson (their first gig together), so lets drop a few James Brown tunes for the hell of it and see where we go from there. Remember folks, as much as you may know many of the tunes now, you have to ask yourself when listening how many you would have known in '91. The supremo that is Norman Jay gives you his Musicquarium. Legends of the Airwaves - Jazzie B OBESeptember 23, 2009 02:08 PM PDT
Trevor Beresford Romeo brought his sound to Kiss 100 with a selection of styles and some heavy dub plate support. This presenter became a household name for production, DJing and for the sound that was London – Soul II Soul. Black British Music sums up this entrepreneur’s journey through time, relentless in his strive for great music. The Soul II Soul crew are performing in Dublin this month for the 250th Anniversary of Guinness, which confirms Jazzie B’s massive position in the music of the last twenty years. Sample then the presence of the original funky dread – a mighty force. Check out http://www.myspace.com/officialjazzieb and his Jazzie B's Back 2 Life BBC Radio London on Friday nights playing an unmissable mix of funk, soul and house. Legends of the Airwaves - Nick ManassahSeptember 14, 2009 05:09 AM PDT
Manassah Sound System joined Kiss FM in 1987 providing a roots reggae weekly that boosted the already magnificent Joey Jay and David Rodigan programmes. Enjoying both radio and sound system popularity Nick was fundamental in the advancement of the music in London and a brilliant example of how the music of the street, being provided by Pirate radio became legal, accessible and popular and why these pages of ours stand as key moments in the history of black music in this country. Manassah then went on to produce and release records with the same conviction as the shows themselves. Visit http://www.trustthedj.com/NickManasseh/bio.php?djid=2115 for more info. So we go back - back to Kiss FM and a show that speaks for itself. Reggae music how we at ukvibe like it- RUFF. |
Podcast SummaryWe keep talking about the people who played the music. It's easy to find out about the people but not so easy to hear the shows. We at UK Vibe decided to delve into the cassette library and offer up for you some amazing shows. We can't say the transfer to mp3 is great, we can't say every show is in full, but we can tell you they are samples from an era in the UK where people did not compromise.
